Mitt Romney's Jesus

Take a good look at this picture. That is Mitt Romney's Jesus.

Mitt Romney's speech, Faith In America , was supposed to help him put aside any qualms some of us may have about his Mormon beliefs. My guess is that people now have MORE concerns because they really do not know the history of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints or what they teach and believe. I am not sure the LDS understand it themselves as it seems to be a conglomeration of man made traditions and secret rituals that originate from a vision of their founder Joseph Smith. And it is astonishing that it is the 3rd largest religion in America.

As the story goes, (and depending on the source) Joseph Smith had a vision from an angel named 'Moroni' who gave him instructions on where to find an ancient Egyptian scroll of some sort buried in upstate New York. This vision formed the basis for what they believe.

There has always been a mystique about Mormonism which I believe the Mormon church fosters. It is like a huge Masonic Lodge or Temple with all its secret rituals and bizarre beliefs. What makes Mormonism even more bizarre is that it is relatively new. Joseph Smith was murdered by a mob in 1844 at age 38. (He was running for President at the time) So, how can something so new and indigenous to America be so elusive to so many in this country?

Back to Romney who thinks it is time to explain himself because the Mormons call themselves Christians and speak of Jesus Christ. They aren't Christians at all. But Romney blew it. Not for votes but for Jesus Christ. He would have been better off all the way around had he left our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ out of his speech. Here is what he said about Jesus Christ:

"There is one fundamental question about which I often am asked. What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. My church's beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths. Each religion has its own unique doctrines and history. These are not bases for criticism but rather a test of our tolerance. Religious tolerance would be a shallow principle indeed if it were reserved only for faiths with which we agree."

Each religion has its own heresies, too when they stray from the Holy Word. But really, this explanation is the bait and switch Mormons use to make themselves look more mainstream. Polygamy embarrassed them. Still does as it is still practiced in certain areas secretly. Admitting that they believe Jesus Christ and Satan are 'spiritual brothers' does not go over well in Texas so why bring it up? Or, that God had sex with Mary which produced Jesus Christ. Another bait and switch that makes Mormonism so seductive is their clean cut all-American freshness and their pretense of morality. As a group and in general, they are very successful in business. But there is something very sinister lurking underneath.

It is a cult. It started out as a cult and it still has a cultish hierarchy with it's earthly 'twelve apostles'.

My problem with Romney is not that he is not a Christian. My problem is that he belongs to a cult. Of course, that 'cultishness' takes on many forms and being a Mormon does not mean one is orthodox, practices polygamy secretly. But my question is this: Is Romney a nominal Mormon or an Orthodox Mormon? And what is an 'Orthodox Mormon' these days? Where do those twelve earthly apostles fit into his life?

Does Romney really believe that Joseph Smith was visited by an angel named Moroni a few hundred years ago? I can understand why someone believes the Pope is the Vicar of Christ. I can even understand why Muslims believe Mohammad. But, I cannot wrap my head around why an educated person living in the United States believes Joseph Smith's vision just over 200 years ago. That is 'baby years' in terms of religious beliefs. And Mormonism is growing like wild fire due to their 18 year old pimply faced missionaries they call 'Elders'. (Romney did his 'mission' stint in France)

Reading about Joseph Smith gave me the creeps. But something kept nagging at me. Here is a sanitized account (Which I will not edit) of his 'revelation', at age 14, taken from this Mormon website:

While I was laboring under the extreme difficulties caused by the contests of these parties of religionists, I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible.

At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God. I at length came to the determination to "ask of God," concluding that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture.
So, in accordance with this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally.

After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction

But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction-not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being-just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.

It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name, and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right-and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof." Such knowledge as was communicated in this unprecedented revelation could not be held secret within the breast of the youth.

He hesitated not to impart the glorious truth, first to the members of his family, who received his testimony with reverence, and then to the sectarian ministers who had labored so diligently to convert him to their respective creeds. To his surprise, these professed teachers of Christ treated his statements with the utmost contempt, declaring that the days of revelation from God had long since passed; and that the manifestation, if indeed he had received any such at all, was from Satan.

Nevertheless, the ministers exerted themselves, with a unity of purpose strangely at variance with their former hostility toward one another, to ridicule the young man, and to denounce his simple though solemn affirmations. The neighborhood was aroused; bitter and vindictive persecution was waged against him and his family; and he was fired upon by a would-be assassin. Through it all he was preserved from bodily injury; and in spite of increasing opposition he remained faithfully steadfast to his testimony of the heavenly visitation. In this condition of trial he continued without further direct manifestation by heavenly beings for three years, expecting but not receiving the additional light and added instructions for which he yearned. He was keenly sensitive of his own frailty and conscious of human weaknesses. He pleaded before the Lord, acknowledging his imperfections and supplicating help.

Notice in this encounter/vision he was not inquiring about the True Christ Jesus...but the right 'sect' to join. Hmmm...that right there sounds fishy enough. Let me see... one supposedly has an encounter with the Holy Savior of Mankind and casually inquires whether they should be a Methodist or a Baptist? If you believe even the sanitized version, I have some stocks to sell you.

So, in the end, we have to ask ourselves what we should make of a man that stakes his eternity on a bizarre vision of a 14 year old boy? Is that not a cult? I have not even gone into his other encounter with the angel named 'Moroni' and the buried Egyptian scrolls.

Romney would have done well to leave Jesus Christ out of his speech. It is NOT the real Jesus Christ he believes in at all. It makes me shudder to think what it really is.

My guess is that people are now burning up Google after this speech searching for the beliefs of the LDS. My prayers are that none will be converted to this bizarre heresy that began with a 14 year old boy who supposedly becomes an earthly prophet in the same vein as Paul or Peter.

One more thing: I do not think Romney is as conservative as he wants us to believe. When is the last time a true conservative was governor of Massachusetts? We might do well to check his record there. We already know he is very good at bait and switch.

Thank you for your post on Mitt Romney and I especially want to thank you for the comments on Mass. I know states like NY and CA get all the bad press but its been my experience that Mass. shows the way of the land far more accurately. Too many Christians support political conservatives because they believe calling yourself a conservative makes you one. Not so. I believe politicians have found a way to dupe the Christian community and have us to gain political power, which they then use for evil purposes.

Hi Rose, Thanks for stopping by. I have had lots of friends in Mass who have always joked about their 'conservative' politicians.

We fail to see that 'republican' does not always mean 'conservative'. And in all presidential campaigns, they always seem to run to the right of their actual record.

Yet, I have bigger problems with Romney in that he is in a relatively young religious cult that believes in the visions of a 14 year old boy who grew up to be considered an 'apostle' in the same vein as Peter or Paul.

Now, that is scary.

I´m really impressed with your comments, specially because you are giving an opinion without any reference, specially with the picture.

If you want to give a supported opinion you have to do a research about that issue, specially about politics and religion, but if you are just repeating some others opinions with out your own research you are a dangerous ignorant.

Fist of all your nation was created thanks to a religious movement, because some pilgrims run away from intolerant countries, so to be a religous person is not new,in fact is the US base. In the other hand Joseph Smith was a Prophet NOT a GOD, there is a big difference but if you have not read the Bible at least, of course you can´t know it.

The difference between sacred and secret is not only a spelling problem, the normal people take care of valuable things, so if you consider something sacred (Worthy of religious veneration)(1) You´ll protect it from someone who could damage it, that´s why we have Temples, beautiful places with a sacred purpose, one again why don´t you visit a visitor´s center to learn something about it by yourself.

Third: You have the right to believe whatever you want and give your opinion about it but if you are Criticizing someone or something you have to prove it, so talking about Polygamy your article said "Still does as it is still practiced in certain areas secretly." But it is not true, the reality is that when Prophet Woodruf gave the order to stop this practice, some DISSIDENT members didn´t obey the order and they were retired of the church,They and their families are not members anymore. that´s why Nowadays there are some
"families" living in Poligamy but they are not sposored by the church.

Finally talking about the twelve apostles, since Genesis the bible teachs that God use to speak with honorable men (2) ,they are the Prophets, but when he was on earth he ordered twelve apostles this is not new, and when they started to be killed some other took their place until it was impossible because the authority was lost whan the last was killed. but thanks to the faith of a young brave man heavens opened the door that evil men closed, and Jesus Christ and our Heavenly father show him the way to get back with him. For you it is unbelievebable my question is why?? If you believe in things that you can´t see like Atomic particles why is too difficult to believe that someone up is waiting for you?

well if you don´t believe is your decision, but consider seriously the main reason for your antipathy and cynicism, But a man who defends values that these society is losing and that the lack of them taking is promoting the society´s destruction and of our own world cannot be a wrong. option

Lin, my mother in law is a mormon and when we lived out west, we met a number of them. It is a scary religion, and I'm very happy we have moved now to an area less influenced by their presence.

You are right in that 'republican' doesn't always mean conservative but I also submit that 'conservative' isn't always favorable to Christians or Christianity. Much like the vocabulary of the Emergent Church, just because they use the same words we do, it doesn't mean it MEANS the same thing.
